Emergency and Exit Light Testing

Spectrum Compliance comply with all relevant Australian standards for the installation, maintenance and product regulations for emergency lighting systems required in all commercial premises. We can advise on the correct location for all your exit signs and emergency lighting. We will also work with you on a testing and maintenance schedule to keep your business safe and compliant.

How do emergency lighting and exit signs work?

Exit lighting mark the exit route for occupants, pointing them in the right direction. Battery backup is available to hold lights for 90 minutes during a power failure. Emergency lighting is designed to work with the alarm system and guide people to safety during an emergency/fire so they can see where they’re going. It connects with the main lighting of the building and includes a battery backup in case of power failure.

How often do I need exit and emergency light testing?

According to the AS2293.2 standard for emergency lighting testing & inspection, all emergency luminaries and exit signs need to be inspected at 6-monthly intervals. During the inspection, a trained individual must test the lamps and replace any defective lights. Each device will also undergo a discharge test in which a technician will turn the battery charger off and simulate a power outage for a duration of 90 minutes. The test will continue until every emergency light or exit sign is tested.

Your lighting system should receive another test every 12 months with all the same procedures as the 6-monthly test, plus the inspection and cleaning of fittings and reflective surfaces. It is important that you hire a professional to test your system instead of simply replacing the battery on your own. Without a formal discharge test, you could be unaware of potential power failures in your system. A trained technician will be able to identify any faults in your lighting through thorough inspection and compliance with the current safety standards.
